Despite being classified as a pest, they play an important ecological role in the soil, improving soil aeration, water infiltration, and nutrient cycling.

Zanj Sun Squirrel

Native to Tanzania, this small squirrel species is arboreal and diurnal, meaning they are active during the day time. They have a distinctive reddish-brown fur coat that turns dark grey in the winter and a long bushy tail. Zanj Sun Squirrels are sociable creatures and commonly seen in pairs or family groups. They primarily eat fruits, seeds, and insects, and they are crucial in seed dispersal and forest regeneration. While they are not currently threatened or endangered, their natural habitat is under pressure due to over-harvesting of forest resources and human encroachment.

Zanzibar Bushbaby

Endemic to Zanzibar, this small primate is known for its large eyes, long tail, and exceptional ability to climb trees and jump from branch to branch. Also known as the Zanzibar Galago, Bushbabies are nocturnal creatures that have adapted to living in dense forest habitats. Zanzibar Leopard

A subspecies of the African leopard, the Zanzibar Leopard is critically endangered. It is a powerful and agile predator that can weigh up to 100 kilograms and has the ability to take down prey twice its size. They are primarily nocturnal and elusive, and therefore difficult to spot. Leopards enjoy a diverse prey range, including antelopes, wildebeests, and smaller mammals. Habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict are the primary reasons for their decline in numbers over the past decades.

Zanzibar Red Colobus

This Old World monkey is identifiable by its striking black and red fur and is endemic to Zanzibar. Their numbers have declined significantly in the last century due to habitat degradation, hunting, and predation by introduced species. Red Colobus monkeys are arboreal creatures that mainly feed on leaves, and their diet is rich in fiber, making them important seed dispersers for many plant species. Zanzibar Servaline Genet

These opossum mice don’t face any significant threats, and their population seems to be stable across their range.
