The fruit belongs to the freestone drupe. The fruit ripens in Aug and Sep and is a popular table fruit and is used to make prunes. The shape of prune plums does not change when they are baked. Hence it is often used to make tarts. Quetschentaart and zwetschgenkuchen are  tarts made with this fruit as ingredient.
