Watermelon, white currants, wolf berry. These fruits comes to our mind when it comes to fruit names beginning with letter W. We are curious to know how many fruit names begins with the W alphabet. And we started our search for all these names. In this post, we have compiled a list of fruits that start with W.
There are quite a number of fruit names beginning with W. In our search, we also looked at the scientifc names and other names that the fruit may be known locally. In total, we found 24 such names. These are the fruits that begin with W.
Wahoo has a scientific name of Euonymus atropurpureus. Its other names include eastern wahoo, American wahoo and burningbush. This fruit is inedible. Wahoo is a type of deciduous shrub and belongs to the Celastraceae or bittersweet family. This shrub originates from Eastern USA. It can grow up to 8 metres in height.
Weeping pear, also known as willow-leaved pear, has a scientific name of Pyrus salicifolia. This fruit is also inedible. The fruit is green in color and small in size. Weeping pear belongs to the Rosaceae family. Pyrus salicifolia is found in the Middle East. This is a small deciduous tree that grows to a maximum of 12 metres. It has a round crown with a silvery foliage and large pure white flowers. Pyrus salicifolia thrives in infertile sandy soil with its spreading roots. The tree blooms in spring.
White aspen berry has a scientific name of Acronychia oblongifolia. It is also known as yellow wood. Today, there are 1000 varieties of watermelon being cultivated in the world. Based on statistics, 66% of the world’s watermelon supply comes from China.
Citrullus lanatus is believed to originate from north east Africa after the discovery of remains of wild watermelon seeds in Libya which dates to 3500 BC. According to historical records, it was only in 2000 BC when Egyptians started growing watermelon.
Watery rose apple has a scientific name of Syzygium aqueum. Its other names include water apple and bell fruit. This is a brush cherry tree species.
Wax apple has a scientific name of Syzygium samarangense. It is also called wax jambu, wax apple, Semarang rose-apple and Java apple. The Syzygium samarangense plant belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is found in the Nicobar Islands, Greater Sunda Islands, the Andaman and Malay Peninsula.
The white currant is not a species on its own. It is actually a cultivar of the Ribes rubrum species which is known as red currant. Wongi has a scientific name of Manilkara kauki. Its other names include kacik, caqui and wongi. This belongs to the Sapotoideae subfamily and can be found in Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and north Queensland Australia.
Wood-apple, also called the elephant apple, has a scientific name of Limonia acidissima. The Wood-apple tree originated from India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. This is a large tree with rough bark and grows up to 9 metres in height.
